Scientists have found the gene for shyness. They would have found it years ago, but it was hiding behind a couple of other genes.
– Jonathan Katz –
A single leaf isn’t very big, but when a bunch of them work together they are very good at hiding things.
A large shade tree is a good location to hide out from the heat of the sun.

But once the leaves have fallen, this football size wasps nest is hidden no more!
Wasps construct the nests out of paper made from wood pulp. In the fall, all of the wasps will die except the fertilized queen. She’ll overwinter somewhere, and start a new colony in the spring. The old nests will fall apart before the winter ends – they aren’t made of the most durable of construction materials!
Yes, it’s amazing the things you see when the leaves decide to fall! Your eye sees things that most of us don’t and that camera of yours is amazing. 🙂

Hi Barb – Sadly, the stinging things have all died (except for the queen who, after a frenzy of mating found other accommodations for the winter.) The females rule the wasp world!

That top picture is neat, almost looks like a heart shining through the leaves. That wasp nest is awesome. We had one of those years ago, it was out in our back field so not really a concern but we were a little worried about it. Eventually we just let it stay and they never caused us any trouble.

Hi BRC – We have a much shorter wasp season than you do, I expect, so to see nests of this size is really something!
