It comes with no warning. Days of being sad. Energy tank on empty.
Dark, dreary, heavy days.
Overwhelmed. Too much, too many.
I’ve been down this road many times before. It always passes. It is seasonal or hormonal or just being sad.
It isn’t depression, but it is a gift that helps me to understand those who battle real depression.
If you know someone who’s depressed, please resolve never to ask them why. Depression isn’t a straightforward response to a bad situation; depression just is, like the weather.

I wanted to write down exactly what I felt but somehow the paper stayed empty and I could not have described it any better.

Have had a few of these my self, Margy. And yes, it does give one appreciation for those poor folks with lingering depression. Interesting story. In my senior year at college I had applied to be accepted at Naval Officer Candidate School. One of the questions on the app was “Have you ever been depressed?” I answered yes because, who hasn’t? The Navy made me go to a psychiatrist to get cleared from any mental health issues. He told me “don’t ever answer yes to that question on medical questionnaires unless you have been depressed for a long, long time, not just occasionally.” I learned my lesson.

I think the clinical diagnosis of ‘depression’ is much more specific now than it was back in the day, isn’t it! Fortunately, as a society, we have learned a lot about depression and how important it is to facilitate professional help for family members who need it.

I find I feel this way on those first few cloudy, cool days of fall and again during January and February, when the sun just refuses to shine. It always wears off (eventually) but it sure is an uncomfortable time. I know people (including family members) who suffer from clinical depression and it is NOT the same thing at all (multiple S.A.D. by about 100 and you might come close!) I’m still surprised by how many people think they should “just get over it” – if only it was that easy!

We’ve sure had enough cloudy, cold days for the past few weeks! I think a few hours of being outdoors in the sunshine would help my mood. Snow in the forecast though. So far we’ve skipped fall and gone straight into early winter!

SNOW – now there’s a four letter word I could do without. LOL! We’ve got heat and humidity AGAIN in southern Ontario, but dropping down severely over the weekend. Its been a crazy summer.

Such a timely post. I just got a text from a friend who said she wouldn’t be at a meeting today because she had started crying for no known reason. So she was staying home and taking care of herself.
It is the time of year, isn’t it. Sigh.

Crying is good. So is staying home and taking care of herself!
Time of year – also time of life. Our friends and family age right along with us – that means more transitions, more of what I call ‘the long good-bye’. Some days that can be quite overwhelming.
