Date Seen: May 2012
Location: Southern Alberta
Notes: A large butterfly – 52 to 80 mm (2.0 to 3.1 in) similar in color to the Canadian Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly – except quite different when you look more carefully!

That little dab of color that looks like a color wheel certainly set your Anise Swallowtail apart from our Tiger Swallowtail. Poor thing lost the right tip of its wing.

The lost wing tip didn’t slow the butterfly down at all!

It amazes me sometimes – I get home and on the screen I see a butterfly’s torn wing, but never noticed when taking the photo.

Even with the broken wing, it’s a beauty and still very angelic. It’s interesting to me how damaged a butterfly wing can be and them still fly. Truly a marvel.

I’ve seen some pretty ragged looking butterflies late in the season. Sure doesn’t slow them down at all!
