Andrew Cotter – Olive, Mabel and Penguins – Mirthy Monday (Videos)

Andrew Cotter began his career at Scot FM in Edinburgh before moving into sports commentary for BBC radio and TV. When sporting events were cancelled due to Covid-19 he began posting videos of his labradors, Olive, eight, and Mabel, four, on Twitter and YouTube.

Andrew Cotter narrates the nightly walk of the fairy penguins of Victoria’s Phillip Island as a high-stakes, long-distance race.

First Date

Jeanne Robertson was a professional speaker who specialized in down home humor. In this video she speaks, as she often does, about  her husband, Jerry, who she lovingly called ‘Left Brain’ (Jerry is the man in the green sweater). Jeanne and Jerry died within months of each other in 2021, but Jeanne’s special brand of humour lives on in her many videos.

Do you remember your first date at a Drive Through Hamburger place? Did it feature the accidental escape of ketchup from one of those little ketchup packages, such that there was more ketchup on the girl’s good white blouse than on the guy’s french fries?

It Has to be 9PM Somewhere:

When I was a kid, getting put to bed at 9 PM, I couldn’t wait until I was a grown-up and could stay up until whatever time I wanted. That time is, apparently, 9 PM.

The recent referendum in our Province (that asked if we wanted to stop changing our clocks twice a year) was 49.8% for and 51.2% against. I am disappointed, though not surprised that half of the people wanted that ‘extra’ hour of light at the beginning of the day and the other half at the end of the day. On the positive side, when the clocks change again in early November, most of the clocks in my clock collection will be on time again.

Beep Beep! Has PETA ruled on Cruelty to Cartoon Coyotes?

PETA is asking Major League Baseball to stop using the term “bullpen” to describe the area where pitchers warm up and instead use the term “arm barn.” The nonprofit organization argued that saying “bullpen” is insensitive to cows in a news release on Thursday.

A Motorcycle Joke

If my name was David and I had a boy, I would have to name him Harley. That way, he could introduce himself “I’m Harley, David’s son.”

Had Enough of Winter Yet?

Dear Mother Nature,
Having received my free sample of winter, I would like to cancel the remainder of my subscription. Thank you.

As I’ve previously mentioned, we’re still in Alberta ‘enjoying’ our first full cold and snow winter in about 8 years. Though we would prefer to be in warm sunny Arizona, many factors convinced us to stay home rather than fly south, then home weeks later. This included Canada’s recent new rule that anyone who is allowed to fly into Canada will have to present proof of a negative Covid test taken in the previous 72 hours; then they will be required to stay in a ‘detention’ hotel for up to three days, at their own expense, until such time as another Covid test says they are still negative. Then they will be allowed to go home for the remainder of a 2 week quarantine where security officers may pop by to make sure they are where they are supposed to be. Last, but not least, another Covid test must be done on day 10 of home incarceration.

Our Prime Minister is showing how super tough he is when it comes to Covid! I guess that is to make up for the fact that his government failed to procure very much vaccine and Canada is now 45th in the world in terms of doses per 100 people administered. (The UK is 4th, USA is 5th.)

On the lighter side of winter life, here is #DudeDad and #CharlieBerens to tell you How to train for winter!

How Other Countries are Coping During the Pandemic

Back to the theme of fitness:

My favourite labs, Olive and Mabel are urged to join the gym that Andrew Cotter has built in his garage.

Quotes of the Day

The first thing you should know about me is that I’m not you. A lot more will make sense after that.

1. I was wrong
2. I need help
3. Worcestershire Sauce

More Very Funny Videos from Andrew Cotter.

I posted Olive and Mabel Episodes #1 and #2 at Mildly Amusing Missives #9, but you can watch them, of course, on YouTube at Andrew Cotter’s video link above.

She knows that she can still take it by shaking all over the furniture as we get back home.

…the inappropriate stuff with Kevin the doberman from accounts as well…

Andrew Cotter is (or was) a sports commentator – Wimbledon, The Masters, The Olympics – that sort of thing. Then 2020 happened and he decided to post some videos of his Labradors, Olive and Mabel. Millions of views later and Olive and Mabel now own the YouTube channel!

Happy Easter All!

Hope you had an excellent time (in whatever social distance way you chose) with family and friends… Also hope you had some close up encounters with chocolate bunnies.

More Thoughts About Chocolate

A while back I did a blog post full of Chocolate Quotations.

Here is another one I found since then:

They say every piece of chocolate you eat shortens your life by two minutes. I did the math. Seems I died in 1543.

Update on Toilet Paper!

The Car Guy brought home an early Easter present – a 12 roll pack of Charmin toilet paper! It is a huge improvement over scratchy single ply – now I know why the bear on the package looks so happy.

A creative use for toilet paper rolls

I’ve been saving the empty cardboard toilet paper tubes since the ‘Great TP Scarcity’ started. I thought some creative soul would come up with a great idea of what to do with the tubes – which someone did. A Wreath. Theirs (photo on left) looks more Eastery, don’t you think?

So I got busy and started my wreath. I’m going to do a two layer Christmasy one.

My Christmas Wreath

Indian Hills, Colorado

The Indian Hills Community Center has a very famous notice board that changes quite frequently. (Look it up on the internet.) The keeper/s of the sign posts notices like this:

Police car loses wheels to thief! Cops are working tirelessly to nab suspect…

Animals at the Keyboard

I once had a cat that looked almost exactly like this one.

Chevy Vs Mopar

The Car Guy is a mostly Mopar man. He sent me a cartoon of a man standing at the Pearly Gates. Saint Peter consults his laptop to determine whether he will let the man in, then remarks “Says here you put a Chevy Engine in a Mopar.”

Backyard Birding

Here in Arizona, spring means flowers and turkey vultures. We often see them circling overhead. With a wingspan of 67-70 in (170-178 cm), they can be just a little bit unnerving when they decide to check you out. It is even more unsettling this year, given the Covid crisis and the fact we are in a senior’s community where the average age is well north of 75…
